“Farmer Frank” Martin started farming in his back yard and selling his produce at the Prescott Farmers' Market in 2002. Today Crooked Sky Farms has expanded and grows fresh produce for several Farmers' Markets and CSAs throughout the state of Arizona. Crooked Sky Farms produce is “Certified Naturally Grown”, meaning that there is absolutely no use of synthetic chemical insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers on our crops. We care for our soil, water and air quality with crop rotations, cover crops, protective buffer crops, and ecologically sustainable farming practices.
We grow this way because we care about our families’ and workers’ health, the health of our friends and customers purchasing and enjoying our food, and because we want to be good, sustainable stewards of the small portion of this earth that has temporarily been put under our care.
Where We Work and LiveFarmland on the fringes of Phoenix is fragmented and difficult to come by these days. We lease 4 different locations in urban Phoenix, ranging from 10 to 40 acres. We also have property in Duncan, AZ, on the Arizona-New Mexico border, and just recently bought in Virden, NM, 3 miles away. These two Eastern properties lie at 3600 feet in the Gila River Valley, where the climate is slightly different, and can thus grow things like chile and bell peppers much easier than here in the Valley.
This farmer is an exception to our 150-mile rule for this reason: Crooked Sky Farms grows most of their produce from their Phoenix urban land, but may list some produce that was grown on the land they own in Duncan, AZ and in the AZ-NM border town of Virden, NM. These properties are greater than 150 miles from Phoenix and/or are not within state lines.
