Who We Are

We believe that responsible, small-scale agriculture is a critical yet largely missing key to a responsible economy. Our contribution is the production of humane, sustainable, delicious free-range grassfed beef and vegetarian-fed chicken. We know that managing land well can restore the biodiversity that our landscapes are losing at a frightening rate. That’s why all of our decisions have the goal of ensuring our practices are socially, economically, and environmentally sound. We feel that the labels ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ have been abused in the business, and refer to ourselves as “Beyond Organic.” Our meat is regularly inspected by the Arizona Department of Agriculture and is always free of hormones and antibiotics. Our animals openly graze in pastures of native Arizona plant species and never receive corn, processed grains, or animal by-products in their diet. You are cordially invited to visit our website for more information!

Where We Work and Live

The ranch headquarters sprawl near Winkelman, AZ on the western side of the Lower San Pedro River valley, facing East across the vast lands of the San Carlos Apache Nation. The land lies in the remarkable transition zone between the Sonoran Desert, Chihuahuan grassland, and oak woodland, fringed by the gallery forests of the Lower San Pedro River.

The other half of our operation is located at Cold Creek Ranch along the Mogollon Rim, just East of Clifton, AZ. Together, roughly 12,000 are under the direct management and care of the Double Check Ranch family enterprise.

This farmer is an exception to our 150-mile rule for this reason: Double Check Ranch’s Cold Creek Ranch land is a vital part of their business, and is greater than 150 miles from Phoenix.

Round Roast
A Round steak is cut from the round primal cut of beef. Specifically, a Round steak is the eye (of) round, bottom round, and top round still connected, with or without the "round" bone (femur), and may include the knuckle (sirloin tip), depending on how the round is separated from the loin. This is a lean cut and is moderately tough but still tasty. Lack of fat and marbling may make round steak dryer than other cuts after cooking, so it is commonly prepared with slow moist-heat methods including braising, to tenderize the meat and maintain moisture. The cut is often sliced thin, then dried or smoked at low temperature to make jerky.
